Okay, okay. I know what you are thinking. You are asking, why are you cleansing? Plenty of people I speak with tend to think that when you say, “cleanse”, it directly correlates with weight loss by swigging on a lemon, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper concoction. While yes, I have indeed tried that unbelievable torturous method (only to get through 2 days!) I still am very interested in cleansing my digestive track as well as internal organs and skin of toxins while feeling sustained. My answer, The Brown Rice Cleanse.

With this cleanse you consume 3 meals a day, drink plenty of water, and definitely feel more full than with the other cleanses. Although, in comparison to my normal food consumption, this is lacking and as of day one, and I feel quite hungry but have yet to make dinner.

So here are the guidelines and a bullet point list of what you can include as far as fruits and veggies. Yes it is called the brown rice cleanse, but you can devour other foods.

I will be doing this for 3 days.

NIGHT BEFORE CLEANSE:
Eat a green leafy salad for dinner. This begins the process of sweeping the bowels, ridding the body for the cleanse and new nourishment. Drink cup of detox tea. (I did not have detox tea, so instead drank Nighty Night tea instead (recommend the detox at this point though).

Menu Plan:
Try to be consistent with times of day when you eat

Morning: First thing when you wake up sip on a warm cup of h2o w/ lemon. I squeeze a half of a lemon then put part of the peel in the water to steep. Since I absolutely love a yummy hot espresso in the AM this still allows me to keep up with a routine. Does not taste as delicious, but I get why I’m doing it 🙂

Breakfast: Green smoothie or brown rice.

Green Smoothies:
All fruits and veggies you should be using are great detoxifiers. These drinks are very healing, soothing and stabilizing.

**Adding fruits in the morning are a good way to enhance your body’s natural cleansing process–add at least one veggie (I like spinach, lettuce, cucumber or avocado) and a few fruits to this morning mix–remember that the whole pear or apple is not necessary maybe ½ or 1/4 the body is really receiving the food just like if you ate it whole. Throw what you want in the blender w/ one of your juices (I apple, but make sure it is 100% juice and only use a glug).

A good option- (what I used on day one).

  • spinach leaves (two big handfuls)
  • one large carrot
  • one stalk of celery
  • one handful of fresh Italian parsley leaves
  • a nub of ginger (use as much as you like. The more, the spicier it is).
  • half of a cucumber
  • one glug (medium pour) of 100% apple juice.

Note: these amounts were for two people.

Here are some examples of what you can use in you combos. Use what veggies you like and sweeten it up in the AM with your fave juice.

Cleansing Veggies: (If you are exhausted, restless, or scattered–drink green!!)

Beets—cleanse liver and intestinal tract also assisting in blood sugar balance

Carrots–excellent for cleansing–great to enjoy as a juice or raw, best if eaten in the morning or @ lunch–high energy and stimulation content–great pick-me-up

Green onions or scallions–antimicrobial which help to protect against infection, as well as promote growth of good bacteria

Celery–help move toxins while keeping nutrition in

Cucumber–helpful in cleansing the skin–detoxification of heavy metals this is a very calming and cooling veggie

Glorious Greens: What they do!

Aid in blood purification, cancer prevention, improved circulation, strengthened immune system, promotion of health intestinal flora, improve liver, gall bladder and kidney function, clearing of congestion, especially in lungs by reducing mucus. High in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and Vit. A, C, E, K. They are packed w/ fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micro nutrients and phyto-chemicals.

Spinach–great protein and antioxidant.
**Antioxidants are particularly important while cleansing because when we cleanse, our bodies release toxins into the blood stream that have been wrapped around our tissues. These toxins must travel through our bodies and get out!! Many of these toxins are carcinogenic and antioxidants provide the natural and powerful protection against these cancer causing microbes, while h2o and other foods help eliminate them.

All Lettuces (endive, arugula, romaine, butter lettuce, spinach, dandelion greens etc) –high in h2o content and fiber assisting in the above.

Kale, Cabbage, Chard–great source of Vit. A, C, Ca, Iron, and chlorophyll

Parsley–blood purifier, kidney cleanser elimination of poisons in the body

Sprouts—packed w/ protein

Lunch: Brown rice and steamed veggies (self explainitory) or Green Smoothie (mostly greens) or a garden salad seasoned only with cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, and black pepper or red pepper chile flake.

Dinner:
Same as above and finish the day with detox tea. On the 4th day when transitioning back into eating other foods it is nice to add miso soup to this combo–treating it kinda like a rice bowl–top w/ sprouts.

Key things to remember:

Chemically speaking cleanses are divided into 3 stages-usually it gets a little worse before it gets better.
1-reorientation system shock and change–stomach contracts and digestive tract is cleansed

2-liver starts to cleanse–throwing poisons into the bloodstream for elimination–you may experience nausea, exhaustion, diarrhea, muscle aches, nervousness, shortness of breath–symptoms a lot like the flu, coating of tongue, bad breath, body odor or skin inflammation.

3-deep tissue cleansing begins, blood toxins are removed and cellular debris are flushed from the kidneys–here is where you will start to get burst of energy w/ some of the above symptoms still possibly present. This is where the organs are detoxing and regenerating.

Remember to drink lots and lots of h2o!!

Wish me luck and let me know if you try this. I will be done on Thursday!
